Workshop Overview:

This interactive workshop focuses on the major elements of using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Upon completion of this course, participants will have a greater understanding of the DSM-5-TR and how to use this tool for the objective, evidenced based diagnosing of a client in order to help the clinician in the assessment/placement decision making. Participants will be able to recognize the difference between use, abuse and dependence that existed in the DSM-IV-TR, and the ability to understand and consistently utilize the new diagnostic criteria of Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders (mild, moderate and severe). Small group exercises will enable participants to utilize critical thinking while helping them to gain inter-rater reliability in making a substance use diagnosis using the DSM-5-TR.

Conference Objectives:

By attending this conference you will be able to do the following:

1. Workshop participants will be able to list at least two events that impacted the evolution of the DSM.
2. Workshop participants will be able to identify and list at least 3 changes in the substance use chapter of the DSM that have occurred since the previous version of the DSM (DSM-IV-TR).
3. Workshop participants will demonstrate capacity in utilizing the diagnostic criteria in the substance use chapter with a practice vignette.
4. Workshop participants will be able to identify three diagnostic criteria that could impact a substance use diagnosis when working with medicinal marijuana patients.

Webinar Interaction:

This will be a live, interactive webinar using the Zoom platform. We will have interaction utilizing real-time questions and answers, Zoom polling questions, and breakout room small group exercises.

How do I obtain my certificate of completion in a Webinar World?:

Certificates of completion will be awarded at the end of the workshop day to participants who meet our requirements. We will determine conference attendance through Zoom logs (as Zoom tracks when people enter and leave a conference), ensuring participants were attending during the entire conference. NOTE: You must use your own computer, if you and an office mate are attending the conference, do not surf off somebody else’s monitor because Zoom will state you weren’t in attendance. Your fillable PDF workshop evaluation will be emailed to you prior to the conference. Please fill out this evaluation and email it back to us at the same email address that sent you the evaluation. Valid requests must be received in writing/email within seven (7) days of course date. Late requests for this 1 day workshop can only bring in a substitute attendee or receive credit for a future workshop date. All refunds are subject to a $15.00 processing fee. If paid by credit card, an additional $3.11 fee will be assessed to cover the cost of PayPal processing charges on credit cards. Refund requests require 2-3 weeks processing time and will be issued as a check as is our policy.

Grievance Policy:

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Glenn Duncan LPC, LCADC, CCS, ACS has been working in the behavioral healthcare field for thirty four years. He has lectured nationally on many topics including clinical supervision. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Clinical Alcohol/Drug Counselor, a Certified Clinical Supervisor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. For 15 years, Glenn served as the Executive Director of Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program, Inc. As Executive Director, Glenn continued to hold a clinical caseload and perform clinical services in addition to his other administrative duties. Glenn specializes in working with clients who have co-occurring substance use disorders, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders. Glenn served as an expert panel member for a SAMHSA TIPS book on treating sub-acute anxiety in the substance using population. Glenn teaches nationally and is currently a trainer for the Change Companies (on both the ASAM 3 and The ASAM 4 Criteria). Glenn authored a chapter on the use of live supervision in a community treatment organization for the book entitled “The Use of Technology in Clinical Supervision and Training: Mental Health Applications,” (2016). This course is an NBCC approved course which is good for LPCs, LACs, LCADCs, CADCs, LAFMTs and LMFTs. NJ Social Workers: We have applied for approval from the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.

2) Will this workshop only be held as a live, interactive webinar?

The pandemic has shown us that live, interactive webinars provide us with the ease of being able to do continuing education remotely. We plan to go back to offering these workshops in both interactive webinar and live workshops formats. However, we will only do go back to live workshops when it is safe to do so, and when we feel enough people would support coming out to a live in-person workshop.

3) If the workshop is presented in both a live, interactive webinar and as an in-person training, will this workshop be offered in a hybrid fashion (e.g., open to either those attending in person or via webinar simultaneously)?

No! We currently do not have approval for the hybrid format, nor are we seeking approval for the hybrid format. Therefore, the entire workshop must be taken either as a live, interactive webinar or as an in-person live workshop, and will only be offered as such.
